Arts One Open

Arts One Open is an open, online extension or complement to UBC’s Arts One program that enables anyone to join this voyage of discovery and critical analysis. It provides Creative Commons licensed recordings and other material from lectures given by some of UBC’s most experienced and distinguished teachers. These instructors hope to provoke you to think in new ways about authors from Plato to Shakespeare, Defoe to Coetzee, and about issues such as knowledge, monstrosity, science, and politics.

Biology 345 – Human Ecology Projects

For this third year undergraduate biology course the Students research and uploaded an ignite talk to YouTube on a topic of their choice, created or improved a Wikipedia article on a topic related to sustainability in or around Vancouver and designed and carried out an ecology or sustainability project that benefited their local community.

CLST 260 Gladiators, Games, and Spectacle in the Greek and Roman World

This Classical Studies course has developed a WordPress site for course resources and the instructor has developed and uses an open textbook Spectacles in the Roman World that is licensed  Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License.

edX Open Access Courses

UBC has partnered with edX to offer free, publicly available non-credit courses. Courses delivered through these platforms are structured after Massive Open and Online Courses (MOOCs), an emerging delivery model predicated on providing free and open access to courses to large numbers of students.

ENGL470D CanLit Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

UBC’s English 470D (Canadian Studies), focuses on the intersection of Canadian Literature and Web 2.0. In 2017, the course featured a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in which students were asked to address the exigence of equitable representation in Wikipedia by contributing new or expanding existing articles about Canadian literature.

eNuniciate Pronunciation Resource

The eNunciate site is an openly licensed resource that developed that was born out of the collaboration of the Department of Linguistics and the Department of Asian Studies, so that the former could apply the ultrasound technology to test biovisual feedback (Gick, et al. 2008) in the context of the second language learning, and the latter could provide students with video materials to help them to improve their pronunciation outside the class.

The site includes: instructional videos, phonetics videos, an interactive IPA chart, and instructional resources for Japanese and English pronunciation. These resources were co-created by students. The eNunciate site resource is open and licensed as Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International.

All of the course content and student contributions are available publicly. To participate in activities you need to a be a  student in the course.

The course provides an online immersion in the global learning technologies marketplace with particular emphasis on emerging markets for learning technologies in public and commercial domains. The course site provides access to open content, open discussions, and student resource production.

Evidence-based Science Education in Action

An open collection of video demonstrations of classroom, lab and other instructional strategies which was inspired by the observation that instructors are most likely to consider trying new teaching strategies after watching a colleague or a video that demonstrates the strategy in action in a real setting. The videos are not documentaries or testimonials, but are demonstrations of students learning, and teaching strategies in action. The strategies shown have been implemented at the University of British Columbia and University of Colorado as part of the Carl Wieman Science Education Initiative (CWSEI) and The University of Colorado Science Education Initiative (CU-SEI).

Food Nutrition and Health 480: Dietectics Internship Resources

Students in FNH, Dietetics course students create resources and tools created  for use in internship and to help prepare students for internship. The students use the UBC Wiki and UBC Blogs to develop these resources and learn about open licensing as part of this project.

HIST 396: North American Environmental History

A UBC History course taught by Tina Loo that was part of the WikiMedia Foundation Canada Education Program, which is aimed at enlisting university faculty and students in the task of grounding Wikipedia articles in the existing scholarly literature. Reflections by the instructor available here.

HLWIKI International

The objective of the HLWIKI is to build a health sciences librarianship wiki with an international perspective, but also to emphasize issues affecting practice in Canada. For example, it focuses on expert searching to support the development of systematic reviews in medicine, and searching for the grey literature. The HLWIKI International Advisory supports the Creative Commons principles of sharing and collaboration (i.e. copyleft).

Human Environmental Experiential Learning Initiatives

As part of this project the Faculty of Geography created OER, including a new open textbook on Natural Hazards and created tutorials for learning open source software (QGIS) for GIScience. They developed 360 video content for accessible field trips and created a new WordPress plugin for field trip management (http://FieldPress.ca. Students were encouraged to create public scholarship and the project created a website http://environment.geog.ubc.ca to host student-produced, curated content on environment and sustainability issues.

 


International Reporting Program UBC School of Journalism

The International Reporting Program maintains a creative commons library of all the material that has been filmed, photographed and collected in the field. This entire library of raw material is available for free for non-commercial use. The footage needs to be requested using a web form

Land and Food Systems 350 Wiki Project

This course uses UBC Wiki to host all of the course content. Students also work in groups to develop open articles about different topics in food science.

In 2016 this course moved the group assignments onto the Wikipedia platform and student developed or revised current Wikipedia food science article

LAST100: Intro to Latin American Studies

LAST100, “Introduction to Latin American Studies” provides an overview of the culture and society of Latin America from ancient to contemporary times, and from Argentina to Mexico. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which the region is constructed and represented, and to the cultural politics of race, gender, and class. The course website provides provides Creative Commons licensed videos and other materials from the instructor and students.

LAW423b: Video Game Law

The interactive entertainment and video game industries are governed by a variety of international and domestic laws dealing with intellectual property, communications, contracts, tort liability, obscenity, employment, defamation, and freedom of expression. The goal of this course is to continue scholarship in the area and the instructors are providing open access to course content, including lecture notes and slides, as well as open discussion on the course site.

Linguistics 300 Wikipedia Editing Project

In Linguistics 300 (2014) as a project students collaboratively develop a Wikipedia entry in one of the following four themes:

  • Theme A: Conceptual Foundations: Bootstrapping; Grammaticality; Locality; Performance
  • Theme B: Nominal Syntax: Adjectival noun; Inalienable possession; Equative; Nominal
  • Theme C: Verbal Syntax: Lexical semantics; Head parameter; Subject parameter; Theta criterion
  • Theme D: Binding Theory: Bound variable pronoun; Logical Form; Logophoricity; PRO

Project goals included providing students with the opportunity to master conceptual, technical, and organizational skills.

Neuroanatomy at UBC

Neuroanatomy at UBC is a website that includes photographs, diagrams, illustrations, MRI scans, and 3D reconstructions of functionally important parts of the human brain. The website is maintained by Dr. Claudia Krebs, a senior instructor in the Department of Cellular and Physiological Sciences at UBC. All original content on the Neuroanatomy at UBC website is licensed under a CC BY-NC-SA 2.5 license.

Physics 100 Open Textbook Adoption

Students in the physics course, Introductory Physics (PHYS 100), previously used a commercial textbook as well as four other services or tools to support learning in the course. Beginning in September 2015 they began using College Physics, an open textbook published through Rice University’s OpenStax service and iClickers for in-class response. Instructors have integrated the free, openly available textbook into their course website, which was developed by a team of instructors, graduate students and staff members and is hosted on the edX Edge platform.

Sky, Water, Earth: Science Learning Resources

Sky, Water, Earth is collection of free, online, and self-paced learning resources and activities that are designed  to prepare youths between 16-20 for a career in the sciences.  Learners can earn badges and receive feedback from from UBC graduate students, high-school science teachers, UBC instructors, and experts from the Vancouver Aquarium and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. Current learning modules include Scientific communication: Writing for the public, where learners pick up the communication skills to convey the essence of a scientific discovery to the general public;  What is research? Who is a researcher? Why do we research?,which guides learners through the process of planning and carrying out an investigation in response to a research question; and 360-degree Conservation Photography, where learners demonstrate their creative skills through the process of creating 360-degree conservation photographs.

Spanish 312: Murder, Madness, and Mayhem

The UBC SPAN312 class (“Murder, Madness, and Mayhem: Latin American Literature in Translation”), taught by Jon Beasley-Murray contributed to Wikipedia during Spring 2008. the collective goals were to bring a selection of articles on Latin American literature to featured article status (or as near as possible). Sustainable Forest Management Open Courses

A series of self-directed courses on sustainable forest management (SFM) for the Asian-Pacific region. The courses are intended to enable senior forestry students, young faculty and mid-career professionals to improve their knowledge of SFM flexibly. All or parts of each course are welcomed to be repurposed in current and other courses and programs to support flipped, blended, and online learning. Specific courses include: Sustainable Forest Management in a Changing World; Forest Governance, Public Relations, and Community Development; International Dialogue on Forestry Issues; Restoration of Degraded Forest Ecosystems and Forest Plantation Development; Sustainable Use of Forest Ecosystem Services; and Forest Resource Management and Protection

UBC Open Textbook Adoption Snapshot

Since 2011, at least 46,000 UBC students have been impacted by a range of open educational practices, including 16,450 who have been enrolled in courses in which instructors have replaced traditional textbooks with open or freely accessible resources. At least $1.7 to $2.9 million dollars have been saved by UBC students in these courses and these figures are increasing with the numbers of students impacted by open resources in academic year 2016 being double than what it was in 2015.

Virtual Soil Science Learning Resources

The goal of Virtual Soil Science Learning Resources (VSSLR) group is to enhance soil science education through cooperation and innovative approaches to teaching and learning. The site features educational tools and courses developed to address the following topics: basic soil science principles, soil classification, land-use impacts on soil quality, and raising awareness about soil as an important natural resource.
