Small TLEF call for proposals open; 2018 Priority Focus on OER

By Heather McCabe on September 13, 2017 in Funding Updates, UBCV, Updates

The Office of the Provost and Vice-President Academic is inviting proposals from faculty, staff and students for Small TLEF Project Grants (under $50,000). One of the priority focus areas for 2018 is the development or integration of open educational resources that are intended to be used in a course, multiple courses within a program, or across several programs.  Additionally, successful applicants will be encouraged to license materials developed under an appropriate Creative Commons license. The proposal deadline is 3:00 pm on November 17, 2017.

Proposals that address one or more of the following thematic areas are particularly welcome:

  • Enhanced experiential learning opportunities (including proposals that support ongoing reflection and validation of experiential activities)
  • Development of validated methods to assess student learning (learning analytics)
  • Curriculum/program scale transformations (e.g. multiple courses linked through a year of study, a program, etc.)
  • Concentrated blended courses (e.g. non-13 week/3-hour class meeting structures, blended as reduced seat time; greater proportion of course delivered online)
  • Enhancing and evaluating strategies to promote and utilize faculty-to-faculty and faculty-to-student interaction and communication, especially beyond class meetings
  • Enhancing the scholarly communication skills (writing, speaking, listening, reading) of students
  • Development or integration of open educational resources

Small TLEF Project grants are capped at $50,000 over the life of the project (which can be up to three years). Funding for the second and/or third years of multi-year projects is contingent upon satisfactory progress in meeting project goals. If you are a current TLEF grant holder, and plan on applying for second or third year funding, you will need to submit a proposal by this deadline.

Proposal development support—TLEF General Orientation/Drop-in Sessions

The Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) will hold a General Information Session on the TLEF on September 28, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Room 2.22 of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. In this session, prospective applicants will receive information about the TLEF criteria and application process, tips about writing proposals, and have an opportunity to meet other applicants who are also working on proposals this year.

Between September and November, CTLT will host weekly drop-in sessions every Thursday for prospective TLEF applicants who are developing TLEF proposals. Information on these sessions is posted on the CTLT Events site: http://events.ctlt.ubc.ca/event-category/tlef/.
