Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week is an annual celebration of the important doctrines of fair use and fair dealing. It is designed to highlight and promote the opportunities presented by fair use and fair dealing, celebrate successful stories, and explain these doctrines.
This year, to celebrate Fair Dealing Week, the British Columbia Copyright Specialist Consortium and the Alberta Copyright Consortium will be co-hosting two online events during the week of February 27th. An Introduction to AI and Copyright in Canada

This session will provide an introduction to some of the key issues involving AI and copyright in Canada. After providing a definition of AI, it will discuss issues at the intersection of AI and copyright including whether AI-generated works are capable of being protected by copyright; whether AI systems can infringe copyright; and what user rights are relevant in the context of AI. In addition to providing an introduction to the current law regarding AI and copyright in Canada, this presentation will also highlight several issues involving AI and copyright that may require legal reform.

2022 Year in Review and Considerations for 2023

After almost six years as in-house counsel at the University of British Columbia, Michal returned to private practice where he continues to strengthen his ties to the post-secondary community in Canada as the Co-Chair of Clark Wilson’s Higher Learning Practice. Where there are new developments in the law, Michal is frequently one of the first to share his insights and one of the few who offers their time, expertise and strategic network to bring the higher learning community together and find an effective way forward. In this talk, Michal will review relevant copyright legislative amendments and case law from 2022 and discuss the issues that will keep the library community busy and engaged in 2023.
