Enshittification: How the Internet Went Bad and How to Get it Back

Date: Tuesday, March 26, 2024
Time: 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Location: Online

The collapse of the internet into “five giant websites, each filled with screenshots of text from the other four” wasn’t inevitable. From privacy to harassment to garden-variety ripoffs, the internet’s degradation was the result of identifiable policy choices that can – and must – be reversed. Learn how they broke the internet – and how we can fix it.

Cory Doctorow (craphound.com) is a science fiction author, activist, and journalist. His latest book is THE LOST CAUSE, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. His most recent nonfiction book is THE INTERNET CON: HOW TO SEIZE THE MEANS OF COMPUTATION, a Big Tech disassembly manual. Last April, he published RED TEAM BLUES, a technothriller about finance crime. He is the author of the international young adult LITTLE BROTHER series. He is also the author of CHOKEPOINT CAPITALISM (with Rebecca Giblin), about creative labor markets and monopoly; HOW TO DESTROY SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM, nonfiction about conspiracies and monopolies; and of RADICALIZED and WALKAWAY, science fiction for adults, a YA graphic novel called IN REAL LIFE; and other young adult novels like PIRATE CINEMA. His first picture book was POESY THE MONSTER SLAYER (Aug 2020). His next novel is THE BEZZLE (February 2024). He maintains a daily blog at Pluralistic.net. He works for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, is a MIT Media Lab Research Affiliate, is a Visiting Professor of Computer Science at Open University, a Visiting Professor of Practice at the University of North Carolina’s School of Library and Information Science and co-founded the UK Open Rights Group. Born in Toronto, Canada, he now lives in Los Angeles. In 2020, he was inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame. In 2022, he earned the Sir Arthur Clarke Imagination in Service to Society Awardee for lifetime achievement. York University (Canada) made him an Honourary Doctor of Laws; and the Open University (UK) made him an Honourary Doctor of Computer Science.

OER Project Virtual Showcase and Poster Session

Date: Thursday March 7, 2024
Time: 2:00pm – 3:30pm
Location: Online

The UBC OER Project Showcase will celebrate the innovative work of UBC faculty, students, and staff who have developed open educational resources (OER) projects supported by the UBCV OER Fund and UBCO ALT-2040 fund. The use of OER helps support affordable and inclusive access to learning materials and can allow instructors to provide meaningful, contextualized resources for their students. During this virtual showcase, project teams will present posters about their OER projects.

For those interested in innovative open education projects and practices, the event is a great way to learn about exciting projects and meet innovative faculty, staff, and student project team members from across the university. For faculty, staff and students interested in applying for OER Fund or ALT- 2040 Fund grants, the event will provide helpful examples of the kinds of projects that these programs support.

The event is hosted within a single Zoom meeting room and breakout rooms will be used for presentation spaces. The schedules of presenters and topics is still being developed but will be published soon.
